Wetherby, a rural market town thought to be named after an invading Scottish raider in 1318, is a part of the City of Leeds – where a large number of its 11,150 locals commute to work.
Yet people aren’t the town’s only export, if you’ve ever bought own-brand gravy from a supermarket, it came from Wetherby – Goldenfry supply the entire country with Yorkshire’s second favourite liquid. Though brewed beer during the Victorian-era too, when it also had a mill to its name.
It wasn’t until the Second World War that Wetherby came into its own, when munitions factories sprung up in the new Sandbeck Industrial Estate – and when local lad Ginger Lacey famously became a Battle of Britain flying ace.
Before that, Wetherby was a prominent rest stop for travellers making their way along the Old Great North Road, and today it’s a hotspot for talented local tradesmen.
From cleaners in Linton and vehicle services in Kirk Deighton to kitchen installers in Ingmanthorpe, take your pick of local tradesmen in our Wetherby directory.
Smoke detectors and fire alarms save lives. But they'll only identify a fire in its early stages, and give your family those precious minutes to escape, if they're in full working order.
The National Fire Protection Association recommends that homeowners install smoke alarms inside and outside every bedroom. Have you? Your fire alarms need replacing every ten years, or immediately if you hear random smoke alarm beeping caused by static electricity or water damage.
Don't risk it. Call your local fire and smoke alarm technicians to check your alarm systems are up to scratch, or install a new fire alarm system - of mains smoke alarms, wireless fire alarms, or ionisation smoke alarms.
