York, the historic walled city, is the traditional county capital of Yorkshire with the most complete medieval streets in Europe (The Shambles), over 360 pubs and the largest Gothic cathedral in northern Europe – in fact, York Minster also has more stained glass windows than anywhere else in England.

Tourists flock to see the city’s Roman heritage and Jorvik Viking Museum, the county’s longest town walls and the largest railway museum in the world – which houses the only Japanese bullet train outside of Japan.

Yet York has an industrious side too, its economy was founded on railway manufacturing and chocolate making – Yorkie bar and Terry’s Chocolate Oranges were made here. It’s even a National Science City, with a science park near the redbrick University of York.
