Is Your Garden Ready for Spring?

Want to have the best garden in your neighborhood? Start preparing for spring now, by doing odd jobs like these to set yourself up for the year ahead…
Clear your gutters and drains
Fallen leaves and moss can cause blockages in your guttering. It’s an important task during those winter months to clear any leaves or moss from the gutter to allow rain water from your roof to drain away, helping to prevent damage to the roof and external walls and reducing the risk of penetrating damp. Check your drains for any blockages too in order to ensure water flows away properly.
Tidy your patio
One thing is for sure during winter – barbeques will be postponed until warmer weather. As a result, winter is a great opportunity to clean up the patio, removing any weeds and debris such as leaves and twigs. Once cleared, the patio can be washed down to clean up the paving slabs and make sure your patio area is looking great in time for spring. Using a pressure washer is a quick and effective way to remove dirt from paving slabs.
Make your grass greener
It’s important to keep your lawn in a good condition over the winter. Firstly, rake up any leaves which are covering your lawn. Next, areas of the lawn which are heavily used can become compacted. Use a garden fork to make holes in the ground, allowing oxygen to get to the roots and allowing for drainage. Reduce the risk of damaging the lawn by limiting the amount you walk on it during the winter.
Give your garden tools the once over
Not all your winter gardening tasks have to take place outside in the cold. Winter is a great opportunity to have garden machinery such as lawnmowers serviced and an opportunity to clean up tools, removing grass and soil. Soap, warm water and a brush can be used to clean your gardening tools. Ensure that you dry the tools thoroughly afterwards to help prevent rust, meanwhile a local gardener may be able to recommend local garden machinery service centres.
Empty your plant pots
As well as cleaning your garden tools, it is also beneficial to clean out your plant pots, ensuring they are ready to go once spring comes around. Again, this task can be done inside on those winter days which are just too chilly to go outside!
Check fences for damage
Strong winds are not uncommon during winter and it’s important to make sure fences are not damaged and at risk of collapsing during strong winds. While sometimes collapsing fences are unavoidable, it’s a good idea to ensure that your fences are secure and sturdy. A local gardener will be able to help with this.
These are just some of the important garden tasks which can be completed during the winter months. Whether you’re clearing out leaves from your guttering or caring for your lawn a local gardener will be able to help and advice.
