Dubbed the ‘Merrie City’ in the middle ages, Wakefield remains a very popular city in West Yorkshire.

Wakefield is known as a city of culture, offering many attractions including Sandal Castle and gardens, Wakefield Theatre Royal, Wakefield Museum and Wakefield Library.

The museum was officially opened in 2013 by David Attenborough whilst the library celebrated its opening with an intimate gig from singer Jarvis cocker.

In May 2011 The Hepworth Art Gallery was opened to display the works of local artists such as Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore. It is the largest purpose built gallery in the UK!
